Strategic Communications Symposium Program

Background

The Somali Ministry of Information faced significant hurdles in delivering accurate information to the public due to limited resources, insufficient training, and dissemination challenges. These issues hindered effective communication and increased the risk of misinformation, impacting public trust. The US State Mission Mogadishu recognized these challenges and initiated a Strategic Communications Symposium Program to enhance the Ministry’s capacity to counter misinformation and maintain credibility.

Problem

Our Approach

The program delivered specialized training programs to strengthen the Ministry’s understanding of extremist ideologies and effective communication techniques. It established reliable information verification processes and enhanced digital communication platforms like social media and mobile apps for timely and accurate dissemination. In addition, the program fostered collaboration across government agencies and involved community leaders and civil organizations, creating coordinated messaging and wider public reach.

Results

The training empowered Ministry staff with critical skills to identify and counter extremist narratives effectively. Improved resources and upgraded communication channels enabled the Ministry to reach a larger audience with verified, accurate information, enhancing public trust. Strengthened inter-agency collaboration and consistent, credible communications undermined extremist narratives, fostering increased confidence in the Ministry’s role as a reliable information source.
